Student Volunteering History

historypic.jpeg

Over recent years, The Institute for Volunteering Research and Student Hubs have been conducting fresh research onStudents, volunteering and social action: Histories and policies to inform current and future policy and practice.

This initiative aims to fill key gaps in the history of student volunteering and social action in the UK and to locate its evolution in the broader context of nineteenth and twentieth century social, economic and political history.

Outcomes have included:

  • A literature review
  • A working group of interested parties
  • A one-day symposium
  • A website that is a focal point for future contemporary and historical research into student volunteering
  • Student research projects

There is also a video of a brief history of student volunteering, with thanks to adifferentdrumproductions.

This film has been funded by Student Hubs and produced using archive footage from Pathe and the Volunteering England Collection.

For more information please see the dedicated website on the history of student volunteering and social action.
